Jordan Journal: Why do I love my mom?
Posted by: lori on Wednesday, May 09, 2012 - 08:07 PM
The kids were interviewed by a journalist after school yesterday for her Mother's Day blog. She asked the kids "why do you love your mom?" All the answers and pictures are cute. Check it out:

http://fr-ca.etre.yahoo.com/blogues/maman-24-7/pourquoi-ta-maman-est-la-meilleure-maman-du-monde.html

I was going to make you fend for yourself in French but decided to be nice and translate. :)

Sydney:
“She helps me with my homework. When I go to bed at night, she lets me read one or two chapters of my book. Before dinner, she lets me play outside with my brother.”

Myles:
“I like to give her hugs and she gives a lot to me too. She comes to pick me up from Pre-K every day. She plays basketball with me…and she lets me win!”

Thank you Maude for including our kids in your blog and my compliments to your photographer for taking such cute pictures! It was a nice Mother's Day gift to me!

Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful women in my life. Enjoy your weekend. I hope you get pampered, get lots of hugs and if you happen to play basketball, I hope someone lets you win.

Jordan Journal: An update on Sara
Posted by: lori on Tuesday, May 01, 2012 - 10:50 AM
The day after I arrived in Denver, Sara was moved from the hospital to her physical therapy rehab facility. She did 3 hours of intensive physical therapy and occupational therapy each day. I’m proud to say that she amazed the doctors, specialists and therapists with her fight, desire and hard work. Based on her condition at the hospital last week (with no mobility), the doctors thought she might have to stay at the rehab facility for 4 months before going home. She left in less than a week and is actually already home. She’s far from 100% and still has a lot of PT and OT to do each day but I’m just glad she is back home where she belongs.

She still doesn’t have any feeling in her feet but that hasn’t stopped her from walking with a cane (with a slight swagger even!). The GBS has affected her sight too so she needs to do a lot of optical nerve re-training. The GBS causes her to see double and makes her dizzy. That will also get better in time though. Her biggest challenge is to relinquish her usual “Super-Mom” role. Because her body is working overtime to heal and get strength, she’s experiencing a lot of fatigue. She is officially my hero. She has overcome so much since Easter. There were such dark moments but after day 4 of the treatment, there were literally jaw-dropping improvements each day.

I was so happy to be in Denver and play the role of pseudo mom and wife for Sara’s family. I stayed at their house and took care of all the mom duties…and also delivered yummy lunches to Sara and cheered her on. I know Sara’s kids missed having their mom at home but I don’t think they skipped a beat. I was so honored to help out and there isn’t a more appreciative and amazing family.

Speaking of amazing people…I have quite a team of my own in Montreal. Matt was his usual loving and supportive self, taking on all the duties. (You’ll have to ask him about how creative the tooth fairy was too while I was gone!) He had lots of help for the kids after school from Cynth, Rosa & John. I can’t thank you all enough!!!! Thanks for caring for our tired, hungry and at times cranky kids after school. Lots of love! It truly takes a village.

Jordan Journal: Even the mundane things in life are blessings
Posted by: lori on Tuesday, May 01, 2012 - 10:45 AM
We take so much for granted. We can get so wrapped up in our busy lives that we sometimes don’t appreciate the fact that we are indeed blessed to be able to be so active and busy. Running errands? Cleaning toilets? Working 12-hour days? Yep, they are all blessings.

We have everything when we have our health. Getting the news about Sara this week has rocked and humbled us all. How an active person could be white river rafting 3 weeks ago and now have to start from scratch, learning how to walk and use her arms again. Guillian Barre is a tough diagnosis but GBS won’t beat Sara down. She’s battling this head-on and I’m happy to be in Denver right now with her as one of her biggest cheerleaders. She’s doing well but please keep the prayers coming because it’s a long road for her to get back to 100%. For now, we’re celebrating the baby steps…brushing her teeth, feeding herself, sit, stand, sit, etc. Go Sara go!!!

Jordan Journal: A blessed Easter
Posted by: lori on Saturday, April 14, 2012 - 08:58 AM
On holidays it hits home just how far we are from Colorado. It's 1,900 miles to be exact. (Yes, I still think in miles, rather than kilometers...and always will) We really missed having some family time in Denver but I took comfort in knowing that we were all singing the same songs at church and celebrating by having a big Easter meal.

For the 4th year in a row, we had the pleasure of joining the Sa/Vallacorba family for Easter. Rosa put on an unbelievable feast for 20 of us with more courses than I can even mention. The kids had a competitive Easter egg hunt and loved spending the holiday with their best friends. After all the courses, dessert and coffee; we were all just starting to digest and then John (Cynthia's dad) disappeared into the basement kitchen to start on his special SPICY sauce. No one thought they were hungry yet low and behold, by the time the sauce was made, we all found room for more pasta that night! The extra food wasn't necessary by any means but boy was it tasty!

Nothing changes the fact that we are still 1,900 miles away from Denver but days like Easter make us feel happy, loved and lucky to have a Canadian family and a support system in both places. :)

Kid's column: Syd lost her front tooth!
Posted by: lori on Tuesday, April 03, 2012 - 09:58 PM
Syd proved once again that she has her dad's high pain threshold. Her front tooth was loose today but not necessarily ready to fall out. She wiggled it until it bled...so much so that she looked like a vampire.

She knew that Matt was going out of town tomorrow and she wanted him to see her lose it. With a lot of determination from Syd and muscle from her dad, the tooth came out. You've never seen such a happy child and a sweet gummy smile.
